Summary: Can dogs have pears?” In this blog, learn whether dogs can eat pear and if pears are good for dogs...

Can Dogs Have Pears?

Yes! Dogs can eat pears. They are perfectly safe for dogs to eat, as long as the pit, leaves, stem, and seeds have been removed first. These parts of the fruit contain cyanide, and this can be toxic to dogs.

Are Pears Good For Dogs?

Pears can make a great snack for dogs because they’re packed with fiber, vitamins C, A, K, folate, copper, potassium, antioxidants, anthocyanins, lutein, and zeaxanthin.

However, they should be chopped into bitesize pieces to help minimize any risk of choking.

You should also only feed your dog fresh, ripe pear. Canned pears are typically kept in sugary, artificially sweetened syrups which could be dangerous for a dog to eat.

Pears that aren’t ripe should also be avoided. These are much harder to chew and can give a dog a tummy ache.

3 pears sit in a row on a light gray surface, against a black back drop. The two on the left are larger than the one on the right. They are also green, while the right one is more of a patchy brown and yellow.

As with all fruits, pears should only be offered as a treat food due to their natural sugar content. Large amounts of sugar can cause stomach upset. If your dog has diabetes, you should check with your vet before offering your pup pieces of pear.

Can Dogs Eat Pears Skin?

Yes – you don’t have to peel pears before serving them to your pup. It’s always advisable to wash your fruit before you or your dog eat it if you’re leaving the skin on, to be sure no pesticides are lurking on it though.

Can Dogs Eat Asian Pears?

Yes – Asian, Korean, and the common Conference and Bartlett pears are all OK for your dog to eat.
