As a veterinarian, I often talk with pet parents about proper dental hygiene for their dogs. Ideally, a dog’s teeth would get brushed every day, but let’s be honest — that’s not happening for most dogs. Even for dogs like my senior girl Anna who do get their teeth brushed regularly, tartar buildup can eventually lead to stinky breath and other dental issues.
It’s nice to have other options outside of toothbrushing that target tartar buildup and help freshen breath. That’s why I was excited to try ProBright® Advanced Dog Dental Powder with my own dog. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it not only improved my dog’s dental health routine, but she absolutely loves the product.
Is there anything cuter than a senior dog doing a happy dance for their food? Anna is certainly excited when she knows she’s getting ProBright!
What Is ProBright Advanced?
ProBright Advanced is a dental powder for dogs that targets tartar buildup and bad breath in dogs. The powder is added to the dog’s food and distributed throughout the mouth as the dog eats their meal. This includes hard-to-reach spots, such as between teeth or the back of the mouth.
ProBright is manufactured in the United States with domestic and globally sourced ingredients and was designed with the help of nutritionists, veterinary dentists, and scientific formulators. PetLab Co. carries the seal of the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC), meaning that the company adheres to strict guidelines for animal products from quality control to labeling to testing. The NASC seal is something that we veterinarians look for on supplements to help identify premium-quality products.
Ingredients in ProBright Advanced Dog Dental Powder
The following key ingredients are included in ProBright Advanced:
Brown algae (Ascophyllum nodosum) help to freshen breath by targeting volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), which contribute to bad breath in dogs. It also has been shown to support dog gum health.
A proprietary blend of probiotics that was developed to support healthy bacteria in a dog’s mouth.
Sodium hexametaphosphate targets the formation of oral biofilm and tartar build-up.
Rosemary leaf extract helps to freshen breath and has antimicrobial properties.
Green tea provides antioxidant benefits, supports a normal inflammatory response, and has antimicrobial properties. Green tea has been shown to help target bad breath.
PetLab Co. participated in a clinical study that looked at three VSCs (hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, and methyl mercaptan) that contribute to bad breath in dogs. Twenty dogs participated, and the results showed that the group taking ProBright Advanced saw a significant reduction (40 percent) in hydrogen sulfide in just 28 days.
From personal experience, Anna’s breath is definitely less stinky now that I’m giving her ProBright Advanced dental powder.
How to Use ProBright Advanced
ProBright Advanced dog dental powder is added to your dog’s food once daily. It comes in three sizes:
- Small: Dogs under 25 pounds
- Medium: Dogs weighing 25 to 75 pounds
- Large: Dogs weighing over 75 pounds
For each size, you simply mix 1 leveled scoop (provided with the product) into your dog’s food once per day. The powder can be mixed into canned food or kibble. If it’s mixed into kibble, you can add a little water to help distribute the powder within the food.
Weighing a healthy 45 pounds, my dog Anna gets the medium size of ProBright Advanced with her morning meal. Anna eats a prescription kibble dog food, so I sprinkle the powder over her food and then mix in just enough water to help distribute the powder.
My Experience Using PetLab Co. ProBright Advanced
When I started using ProBright Advanced with Anna, I will admit that the first thing I noted was the algae smell. There is no doubt that the product contains algae! Anna seemed to really enjoy the smell (and the hydrolyzed chicken liver flavor). She always looks forward to mealtime, but when she was first given her ProBright Advanced, she enthusiastically gulped it down. Despite the algae smell of the product itself, Anna’s breath did not smell like algae throughout the day.
As she got used to having her ProBright Advanced with breakfast, she began doing happy spins and paw tip-taps when I would prepare her food. Anna has been taught that once I set her bowl down, she must sit and wait until she is told to go ahead. She would anxiously lean towards the food bowl, occasionally trembling with excitement as she waited for breakfast.
I regularly brush Anna’s teeth in the evening before bed. After about a month of Anna taking ProBright Advanced, I was pleased to see large chunks of calculus (calcified tartar) fall off her back teeth during tooth brushing. Now after several more months, she still seems to have less tartar build-up, and I don’t notice stinky breath. After months of use, Anna continues to be excited to have ProBright with breakfast!
I would recommend ProBright to dog pet parents, whether they engage in regular dental care for their pet or not. Of course, I do recommend that pet parents speak with their veterinarian before adding a new supplement like ProBright Advanced to their dog’s daily regimen.
Please read the label before use. If you have any questions about ProBright Advanced or your dog’s dental health, please consult your veterinarian.
